I've been cautioned to back up before I upgrade to Mt. Lion. I just upgraded yesterday from Tiger to Snow Leopard w/ no issues at all. I dont own a external drive; I want to get started on a project. If a need to back up it will add a day to my process.
Really; how likely is it that I will lose valuable data?

The odds, however small, are never worth it. Honestly, you really ought to back up and avoid the risk since you have nothing to lose by backing up. Plus, with an external hard drive available, you can use it post-upgrade as a backup drive.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

1. Always advise computer details. if it ran Tiger could be too old for Mountain lion.

2. Get an external drive and back up back up back up before you do anything.

Great point Harry!:)

Without doing the research...I'm sure the list of Mac's that are both capable of running Tiger (OS 10.4) and Mountain Lion (OS 10.8)...has got to be a pretty short list!;)

You're 1 day behind if you wait for a backup drive.

The question is:

How many days behind will you be if you lose all the existing data on your current drive?

THAT.

It's unconsciously dumb of you to be running without a backup already. Your data is CURRENTLY at risk. That is a problem you NEED to fix regardless of upgrade plans. The cost of an external drive is *nothing* compared to the cost of professional HD recovery.
