I have an old mac laptop running os x and now have a shiny new ipad,I want to transfer the calander from my apple laptop to my ipad. Help please

More info what year,OS and iTunes version are you using on the Mac?

Laptop is 5 years old it's a MacBook running Osx 10.6.8 iTunes version 11.1.1

The best way may be to use iCloud, however, your MacBook must be running at least Lion OS X 10.7.5. You can not transfer the calender via USB to your iPad.

Um, what the OP says he wants to do is SYNC (not really move) his iCal data from his Mac to an *iPad,* so your USB and HD ideas aren't going to work.

The actual solution is, as chscag said, iCloud (or straight iTunes sync if one prefers).
