I can't copy to external drive which appears to be read only. How can I change this so I can copy photos on to external hard drive?

What format is the external drive in? Was it set up to be accessible by OS X only or shared with Windows? If it NTFS formatted, you'll need a program like Paragon-NTFS to be able to write to it..
If it is FAT32 or HFS (OS X native), then you should have no problems reading/writing to it..
