hi I'm wondering if I can somehow access my imac with no display capability using my ipad? the display broke years ago and now the external display quit working. I've tried different external displays / cables etc. I know I will need another mac soon this one is a 2006 intel imac. in the meantime I really need to access it and I have an ipad. any way I can do this without being able to see whats happening on the imac?

What sort of access are you looking for? If you're looking for access to your files on the hard drive. Remove the HD, install it into an external case, then plug this external HD into a 2nd Mac.

There is a Screen Sharing app I have on my iPad 1st Gen that lets me log in and view the screen, launch stuff. If that is still around would that help you? You need to have screen sharing set up in OSX though.

Sounds like a pretty cool app.:) I'm assuming this works via wireless.

This is the hard part...how to set up the iMac without being able to see (no iMac monitor).

I and most friends I know set that up on our machines. I was hoping maybe he had it turned on before the display went.

Is that screen sharing app part of the iPads iOS...or do I need to download it? I want to try it.:)

Mine is way old for older IOS versions. Will check after I get my work done to see if it's still around and post a URL if so.

Nick, it's Mocha VNC Lite. There is a pay version that offers even more commands but I found this to do what I needed when doing a remote to any of my macs.

I have an iPad 1 just like you (iOS5 as well). Thanks for the help.

Nick,

Splashtop is another alternative that is free. It is a great app and works well from the iPad.
