My control/cmd key does not work in terminal.

For example, when I open a text editor such as nano I cannot exit it without exiting the window/tab. I have tried using both the control and cmd key in combination with every key, and it just doesn't register. I have googled everywhere and do not know how to fix it. Open to suggestions please.
