View attachment 19524 Hey everybody,

My Macbook's display has been turning into horizontal lines lately, sometimes it also makes the screen split.
I've noticed that if I hit the laptop on the bottom, then it can vary the lines and/or make the screen split. When I restart it all goes back to normal.

I tried opening it up and unplugging/replugging the display cable.

It's a 2011/2012 15" Macbook Pro
2.2GHz Intel i7 "Sandbridge"

Any ideas?

Is the machine still under warranty or extended Apple Care? If it is, take it on in and let Apple diagnose it. It may be a loose cable from your logic board to the display area. There's more than one cable that can cause those symptoms. If not under warranty any longer, you can open it up once more but this time follow directions for all the cables as given at the ifixit site.

Thanks, but it's out of warranty, and I tried pressing the other cables back in.

Thinking it could be the GPU...

What happens if you plug an external monitor into it. Same thing...or no lines?

For the heck of it...you could also try an SMC reset:

I tried plugging it in when the lines were across the screen, and it didn't recognize the monitor :/

Try plugging in the external monitor...then restart the computer (with the external monitor plugged into it).
