Was it advertised here or on some other reputable message board? I'd say yes, but if you saw it via a pop up on a porn site, I'd say no.

I second what harry mentioned. Stay away from "tuneupmymac"...and just use Onyx.

I don't get why. It's advertised on this site. Is it unsafe or just not ideal and a time waster?

"MacKeeper" (a VERY bad app.)...is also advertised (or used to be advertised) on Mac-Forums. We don't have much control over what is advertised.

But in any case...Onyx is free!:)

Because those sorts of apps prey on the unsuspecting individuals moving from Windows where those types of apps are basically an essential part of maintaining the OS. Most of them only began making such apps after OS X moved to Intel and are/were primarily Windows software companies looking to expand their market. For the most part, they are not needed in OS X. Half or more of the things many of those apps do are already provided in OS X without the need to pay for them.

For regular maintenance, the free Onyx available here is the most recommended app in Mac communities by a vast margin.

Thank you everyone for replying to my concern about downloading Tune Up My Mac.
I believe that the reply from bobtomay was most helpful. I will look into Onyx.

Another thing, "regular maintenance"...

"Regular" maintenance does not have the same connotation in OS X as it does in Windows.

After 15 (now getting closer to 25) yrs using Windows, and as a semi-extreme gamer and overclocker at the time I bought my first Mac - my regular maintenance had been once a week. Like most of you, I tried carrying a lot of those habits over from that experience and it took me well over a year to figure out all that stuff really was not required to maintain the speed of OS X.

Unlike that other OS, regular maintenance on my Macs now occurs, typically, only "after" I notice slow downs, not before.

How often you'll need to do any type of maintenance depends on your usage patterns. For me, that's about once every 3-4 months if using a hard drive. My wife hands me her machine saying it seems to have slowed down once every 9-12 months. I believe with my first SSD, I did nothing that would be considered "maintenance" until it was well over a year old.
