ios7, alert sounds gone

Hi,
I’ve installed ios7 on an iPad2, and now can’t get alert sounds at all, so there’s no sound for incoming or outgoing mail. The sounds are fine in the selection menu. Oh, and music plays fine through the speakers, so it’s not a hardware problem. Any ideas?

I’ve been a bit of a twat. Had the mute on in control panel. In my defence, it’s not easy to see. Some of this minimalist stuff is a bit too minimalist.
