iPhone won't connect to iTunes because it's not updated?

I installed iOS7 on my iphone and when I try to connect it to my iTunes it says I need iTunes 11.1 or later. I went to itunes.com to update it but can only find version 11.0.5...I tried updating itunes from the actual program on my computer but it won't install It downloads and then I go to restart my computer and nothing happens - the computer restarts but nothing has been installed.

Any advice or suggestions??

It goes to 11.1 for me... I'm running a 13" Mid-2012 Macbook Air that has OS X 10.8.5 installed. What are you running iTunes on?

I'm on a 2010 Macbook Pro with OS 10.6.8

Well, it says 10.6.8 meets the requirements. Do you have App Store installed, and if so did you try to update through there or Software Update using the "Apple" logo menu in the upper left of your screen?
