How can I sort folders and messages in Apple Mail

Hello:

I would like to have subfolders and messages sorted separately in Apple Mail. In other words, as is my preference, folders first, sorted (alpha or date or ...) and messages following, sorted alpha or date or ...).

I do not know how, and can't find out how.

Do you guys and gals sort your folders and files together (alpha or otherwise)? And you feel that that is okay? I get all jittery when I see this mix. I would want folders sorted on top of the list, and then the files.

I find the iMac Help a hit and miss, mostly miss. The basics, which one can figure out more or less by looking at the screen, are dutyfully described, but any variation, you are more than lucky if you find.
