Macbook to external display

I have a macbook pro I5 mac os X10.8.4.

When I try to connect an external monitor/tv/projector via hdmi or vga the computer freezes or does not recognize the display.

Anybody have an answer for this?

2017 15" MBP, 16gig ram, 1TB SSD, OS 10.15
After connecting the computer to an external monitor...try rebooting the computer.

Alternatively:

- "Shutdown" the MacBook (using the Shutdown command).
- Connect the external monitor.
- Then reboot the MacBook.
