I am hoping someone can help me with a problem that has started recently with my MacPro. It normally happens when I start using my computer after some activity. This doesn't happen all the time but seems to be becoming more frequent. For instance, I might click on a photo in iPhoto and before it opens the screen dims and the computer goes into the restart mode. I have run Disk Utility and Onyx and everything seems to be fine. I suspect an extension conflict, but that is just a guess. It generates a report log and I am happy to screenshot that next time and post to someone ** might be reading this who believes they can help. Cheers. Quentin

It sounds like your Mac Pro is going into kernel panic. The next time it happens, include a copy of the log for us to look at.

I googled "kernel panic" and the info that came up showed the same dialogue box I am getting when the computer shuts down, so a "kernel panic" seems to be the problem. But how to fix??? Is there a way to attach the full log as an attachment??Cheers

Could be the graphics card on it's way out based on that report.

Would try booting into safe mode and see if it happens.

I'd probably also try opening the box and removing the GPU, giving it (the fan and the slot) a good clean with a can of air just to see if that would take care of it.

I agree. The panic refers to the graphics card. Common problem with older Mac Pro machines.

It ain't a Mac Pro guys. Log says MacBook Pro 6.2 with the nVidia GT 330M alas so there is a difference. QBall have a read of this support article:-

MacPro

The computer is badged as a MacPro, so I am a little confused by the comment that it is not. Just one last question to you all - if it is the graphics card, as you suggest, can I simply get that replaced? Thanks.

Your log shows it as a MacBook Pro using a nVidia Gt330M which is a laptop card. Which is correct Mac Pro or MacBook Pro? A Mac Pro is about 40lbs desktop and a MacBook Pro a laptop.

Mac Pro's use a plug in PCiE graphics card which must be the Mac Pro version or a special flashed former PC card fitted into the PCiE slots. On a MacBook Pro the answer is no the card is part of the logic board. This is what the Mac Pro looks like with a Cinema display:-

Good catch Harry. The OP referred to it in his initial post as a Pro, but the KP report clearly shows it as a MacBook Pro. If I remember correctly from previous posts regarding that same problem and article, Apple will replace the logic board for free if it turns out the nVidia GPU chipset is bad.

MacBookPro Crashing

Thanks again. You are correct. It is a MacBook Pro. Amazing how you can overlook something that is staring you in the face!!!! I gather from your answer that as this is part of the logic board that is what I would need to replace in the problem persists?

Good catch harry - I just glossed right past that in the report.

And yes, if it is the graphics card on it's way out, it would require replacement of the system/logic board.

This model was sold until February 2011 so any chance you optioned the three year AppleCare? For what it is worth I would contact Apple pointing out the problems with this nVidia gfx card and ask if they can do anything for you warranty wise.

^^^ You could still be within the 3 yrs from date of purchase - even without purchasing AppleCare which is the warranty extension harry linked to above.

Even if you're past the warranty by a couple of months, would still be worth the call.
