Daily Kernel Panics on Macbook Pro 5,1

I recently bought a used Macbook Pro 5,1 off of ebay. 15 inch unibody model late 2008. It came with Snow Leopard preinstalled and I could use it without any problems for a couple of hours. After completing all updates to 10.6.8 and stuff I got my first Kernel Panic. It was followed by 3 or 4 more during that day. At first, I thought ok, maybe the update was messed up. I did the usual procedure of repairing permissions, reseting PRAM and all the other stuff. When I finally received the Snow Leopard discs from the buyer (he had forgotten them first time...), I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. However, this still didn't help. The amount of kernel panics I get has drastically reduced. I thought it might be the RAM, seemed likely. I talked to the seller and he agreed to pay for the RAM, since he thought it had been in working condition when he sold it. I installed the new RAM. I used Geekbench just for fun and tried to run a benchmark, twice. It crashed both times. I thought, ok, maybe the programs fault. I went through the rest of the day without any problems. However, today, after hours of usage, I had another panic.

To eliminate the odd of a bad mountain lion upgrade causing the panics, I fresh-installed Mountain Lion after the panic. However, I'm not sure it solved the problem...

This is the most recent panics from yesterday and today:

EDIT: I did already run the Apple Hardware Test a couple of times, showing no problems at all.

It could be most anything from looking at the KP reports. KPs are usually associated with hardware problems but can also be caused by software. Try starting the MBP in safe boot mode and run it that way for awhile to see if it goes into panic. If it panics in safe boot mode that points to hardware.

I did another 2 extended hardware tests. Took around 5 hours to complete both. Way longer than before with only 4 GB of RAM, where it only took around 30-40 minutes per test, now it was 2 hrs 30 mins for the first alone.

No problems found. Could it maybe be a faulty firmware upgrade? It is running the latest firmware 2.8. However, when I run the EFI 2.8 installer, it doesn't tell me that its already installed, it just tells me the installer is not supported by my system. This happened in Snow Leopard as well as Mountain Lion.

Those kernel panics are not being caused by faulty firmware. Also, the Apple Hardware Test while good for some things misses a lot of others. You could try running an extended memory test if you like. MemTest for the Mac is free and can be downloaded from here.

And don't overlook the suggestion to run your Mac in safe boot mode to see if it runs normally that way.

Well, like I said, the RAM is brand new and I am still having kernel panics. I can try safe booting, but don't really see a point in it, since its a fresh install (the second one already) and is only a day old.

I already ran a bunch of memtests on the old RAM and never found anything. Still changed them, as memtest often doesn't find the problem. It would be really bad luck if the new RAM is faulty as well.

I don't really know what else could be causing the problems. It happens on both graphics cards, on both my 750GB HDD and the 128GB SSD and in Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. New RAM also didn't change anything. If it were CPU related, wouldn't it happen way more often? The CPU is constantly being used, so a crash every 6-8 hours makes that seem very unlikely to me, but who knows...

Is there anything similar between the crashes? Toggling something, quitting an app, graphics card switching, etc right before all the crashes?

Most of the time its while using the web, watching videos. However, that might be related to the fact that its mostly used for web browsing at the moment. The very first kernel panic happened during an update that Snow Leopard did. It has happened while gaming, while trying to uninstall the anti-virus (thought it might be the problem), just about anywhere. At the same time, I have managed through several hours of 3D gaming without a problem. It is just very random. I'm on facebook, want to look at something, maybe scroll and it just freezes and restarts.

Assuming it's NOT hardware related, my bet is on you didn't uninstall the anti-virus properly.

Well, like I said, this is a clean install of Mac OS X. I had the Anti-Virus on the very first install running Snow Leopard.

EDIT: Might the kernel panics be caused by a overheating CPU/GPU? I installed SMC FanControl to monitor temperatures and they have been constantly rising. They are still very far from dangerous, but I will look into it further. Started with 48°C (118°F) and is now at around 68°C (154°F) just from web browsing.

That's nothing. I've had mine reach 86°C before while heavy gaming. The computer will shut off on its own if it sees the temperatures getting too high as a safety precaution.

I know its not much, but who knows how much temperatures rise in 6 hrs. I will just keep track of temperatures and see if they are in any way related to the panics.
There is really nothing else I can do at the moment...

Checking the memory out again. You did say brand new but did the memory come from an Apple specialist such as OWC? Macs use low density modules, different to most PC's which use high density. eBay sellers and PC shops generally sell the high density.

I can't tell you if its high density or low density. I have never heard of that before. I looked it up, but there seems to be no clear way to tell. However, I can tell you that I bought two 4GB DDR3 chips with 1066mhz from Corsair at the local computer shop and payed a fortune. So I'm guessing its the right stuff. The old RAM is Samsung RAM. So no cheap stuff either.

I know, but from what I've read, high density memory is a lot cheaper and usually without branding. And since the memory I bought doesn't fulfill these requirements, its probably the right one. If it were the wrong memory type, it probably wouldn't even start, or run without problems for 6 hrs straight.

Well, neither my System Profiler nor the Activity Monitor show any abnormalities. I checked the corsair website for the RAM I bought.

Corsair Memory

I don't see anything wrong with it. Meets all requirements on the Apple website. 1066mhz, 204 pins, etc.
Also, I quote from the website: "Guaranteed to work on all dual channel Intel and AMD SODIMM platforms".

To me it seems like its not the RAM. What other possibilities are there?

I know you have run the hardware tests a couple of times. When you tested the memory did you use the Apple Hardware Test or did you use another utility. Personally I suggest using Memtest My G5 used to crash under almost any kind of load. I ran the Apple Hardware Test numerous times and it passed each time.

One day in frustration I ran memtest and the memory failed almost immediately. In this case the memory was not something I installed. It was memory that came with the machine. I don't know if it was defective or merely not the right spec but the result was the same.

I have run 1 memtest on the new RAM and about 4 or 5 on the old one. No problems were shown.

And it happened again today. Interestingly, it happened right after waking up the machine and opening Safari.
I took out the new RAM today and replaced it with the old one after the panic occurred. While doing so, I made some very interesting observations. There are red markings on the headphone jack and on two places on the logic board. They look like they were made with a permanent marker. In addition, while the logic board screws look brand new, the screws around the fan look like they have been unscrewed before. Could it be that the machine had a logic board replacement? The serial numbers are the same as the ones on the box, but from what I've heard, they can be changed by the technicians.
