• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I am looking to transfer some of my old Hi-8 format tapes to a digital format on my macbook pro. Any advice on the best way to do this. I have toast, I movie and final cut express as my software. Also any good leads on cables. Do they make a RCA to usb3 or Rca to firewire 800 cable that would work better?
Thanks for any advice.

You are going to need a piece of hardware known as a "video capture card".

Would suggest your first look be at ElGato - link.

Actually, if you can find a Hi-8 video camera, you could pop the tape in and transfer it directly through the Firewire (or as Sony insists on calling it, "i-link") port to your MBP and straight into iMovie.

What is MBP? And how does the video capture card...

...work? I have a lot of tapes, I still have my sony 8mm player. I want to be able to transfer these tapes to digital, but the problem I keep having is this: can you edit after the films are digitized, or not? Basically, I want to be able to get all my old 8mm tapes on to digital, so I can then edit them, lablel them, title them, etc.. Thanks

And how does the video capture card work
Connect this: Video Capture | elgato.com to your Mac.
Connect your 8mm tape player to the Video Capture, and follow the instructions that come with it.

can you edit after the films are digitized, or not?
Yes. the Video Capture produces video files that can be imported and edited with iMovie.
