I know I should've had my data backed up, but it's too late for should've.

My 2009 15" macbook pro was dropped while open and the screen was completely severed from the body of the computer.

I need to know how to remove my hard drive and retrieve the data off of it using another computer. mostly what I want is my thousands of songs in my iTunes library that I had compiled by ripping the music from cds.

BTW I have a new laptop, but it is a windows laptop.

please help!!!

thank you.

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Open the MBP up and remove the drive. Place it in an external caddy and hook up to the other computer and see if that will work. No comment about the ripped CD's.

thank you for the speedy response!

is this what i need?

Amazon.com: Hard Drive Caddy Tray for Apple Unibody MacBook / MacBook Pro 13 15 17 SuperDrive (Replacement Only): Computers & Accessories

a already know i need SATA cables, whatever those are.

That's a pretty interesting device...but it would only work with a Macintosh laptop...not your current Windows laptop.

What you want is something like this:

Vantec NexStar TX 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive/SSD Enclosure - Model NST-210S2-BK - Newegg.com

This is just one example. There are many many more sold by just about any place that sells electronic devices.

I'm going to go ahead and order the hardware. Hopefully one of my facebook friends has a mac they can let me use for the transfer. lol

Now this also raises the issue, how do I get the files from said mac to my new windows. will i have to use something like Slydude mentioned?

No comment about the ripped CD's.

As far as im aware, ripped CD's are ok, because we arent breaking any DRM or encyption to rip them to our Macs. Correct ??

There is a demo version on the page I sent you to. I think it is fully functional and free for 10 days but I am not sure. It would be a good way to test and make sure that the disk can be read.

Thanks for confirming that for me. After I posted that link part of my brain wondered if they had added that feature to Windows 7 or 8 without me realizing it. That could easily have slipped by me if it was part of a custom / special installation.
