What you got is a Kernel Panic and the usual outcome of it is a reboot.

What version of OS X is this Macbook Pro running? If it is Mountain Lion, ensure it is running the latest upgrade. If you are using either Lion or Mountain Lion, get into the Recovery Console by holding down CMD+r during boot-up. Then go to Disk Utility and perform a disk repair.

Once that is complete, reboot the Mac and see if continues to have issue. If it does, then power-off, and power-on the Mac and when you hear the startup sound, immediately hit and hold the SHIFT key to get safe mode. You can release the key when you see a gray screen and a progress bar.

The system will fully load up, login and see if you get Kernel panics in this mode.

If you continue to get Kernel panics (KPs), then you might have a hardware issue (usually RAM) and we might need to further isolate that..

If it is indeed a RAM problem, the way to isolate it is to use other (known working) RAM for a while and if you have multiple sticks to isolate them individual by replacing them one at a time..

You can also run AHT to get a quick idea without replacing any hardware.

MacBook Pro 2010 problems......

Take your MBP 2010 to an Apple Service store or service center and have them check the logic board. Leave OS X Mountain Lion on the machine.

If it fails it usually is a free Apple logic board replacement.

Don't give up if it "passes" the test. If the Book was manufactured After April 2010 it may need an upgraded logic board that can handle OS X upgrades.

Sometimes Apple hardware cannot keep up with maajor OS X upgrades so logic boards, in this case, need to be upgraded. My opinion, BTW..

Let me explain my post above.

Last week I bid on and won a MBP 2010 which the seller was practically giving away. Being the honest and thoughtful person I am, I sent him an email asking him if he had checked the logic board at an Apple center. He hadn't.

We canceled the sale and he emailed me that he is getting a free logic board from Apple. His machine was well over 3 years old.

Re a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010), suffering from intermittent black screen or loss of video. It can develop a kernel panic prior to failure. If Apple's video system test (VST) is run by an AASP or Genius Bar and indicates a failed part, it's likely to be replaced at no charge. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011. This is not due to the logic board being unable to accept an OS update as in the post quoted below, but due to a video related issue.

Old software cannot keep up with new Mac OS upgrades...

Some software will not work with new Apple OS upgrades.....

So why wouldn't old hardware interfere with new Operating System upgrades? That is quite a challenge composing software to operate the engineering in all those different hardware models.

I repeat, that is only an opinion from a veteran computer maintenance tech which included a few years in an Apple sales and service environment.

People should exercise due diligence when considering buying a 2010 MB Pro or any other Mac Book around that era. A trip to the Apple service center will save headaches later.
