My older Mac pro is not reading my external drives. It will not read them via USB or Firewire ports although the USB ports seem to read the printer and small card reader fine. Anyone have any ideas about what might be wrong?

It sounds like your Mac Pro is not supplying enough power through the USB or Firewire ports to mount the external drives. You might want to try either a dual USB\Firewire cable or may even a powered hub. Keep in mind that a Printer and Card Reader require very little or no power to work from USB.
