can an ipad replace your computer?

I'm going to buy a 10 inch ipad once my latest laptop dies, which is like the 4th or 5th PC I've gone through over the past 9 years. I don't need 99 percent of PC's programs, and Tablets are much less prone to break with them having no moving parts. It will be my one and only "computer", and I just want to know, has anyone here done this, and can this idea work?

This subject has been discussed ad nauseam here and in the most popular Mac magazines. While an iPad can do many things, it's not a substitute for a computer. Go to the MacWorld Magazine web site and enter a search on the same subject. There have been several articles which show the many ways an iPad can be used as a computer but the overall conclusion was as I pointed out.

The iPad is great for surfing the web, checking emails, checking your social status and perhaps playing a few lame games but that is pretty much it. I do like traveling with it for sure. Depends on you and how you use a computer. But there is no way I could live with just an iPad as cool as it may be.

That's all I use my laptop for. Always have.

Apart from what the top 2 posters have said, i have found Apps for my iPad Mini, for EVERY App i use on my Mac the most, and if need be, i could use my iPad Mini as a do all Device.
Taking nothing away from the Mac lineup (I couldnt live without my MBP, now i have a 256GB SSD in the Optical Bay) if you needed to, with dropbox, and all the Google tools, out there, it can be done, but having a iPad Mini and a 2012 i7 13" MBP you have the best of both worlds.

If that is all you do then perhaps just having an iPad would work for you. Since it will be your only computer I would get one with plenty of storage.

Then maybe you've always been using your laptop like an iPad...rather than a iPad like a laptop (even before there were iPads)!

In addition to all the consumption (audio, video, e-mail) that you can do on the iPad, using the iWork and other related tools and things like Copy/DropBox and iCloud, you could even create documents/spreadsheets and so on..

The iPad (and tablets in general) can do quite a lot these days. The caveat is that you have to be a particular type of computer user (which you seem to be)..
