Problem with iBook 12.1

Powers up, doesn't boot to OS, shows Apple logo, then black square in the center of the screen. Any know what might be causing this? Thanks.

Sure you do mean an iBook? Last model is over eight years old and a PowerPC. Please supply operating system also?

Boot from the Tiger disc and run Repair Disk and see what is reported.
