Microsoft Wordpad files can be opened in Windows by Word and of course Wordpad, however, they can not be opened in OS X. Tell the sender of the email to attach the file either as a text file or Word file. Both can be opened in OS X. There is no way to convert a Wordpad file on your Mac.

Not Microsoft Word. Macs and iOS devices are fully compatible with Microsoft Word. They are not compatible with WordPad (a different program) because MS has chosen not to license the format or make an iOS version. It's on them, not Apple.
