We don't blame you! I recommend replacing all the modules, not just adding new ones. Having mis-matched modules can lead to instability. Probably the best place to get them from is OWC. They'll get you the right ones for your model Mac.

BTW, I also recommend holding on to the stock RAM until you are absolutely certain that the new memory is working well. Sometimes when people have problems with instability, putting the stock RAM back in is a good troubleshooting step. Once you are sure, you can always re-sell it on eBay or Craigslist. I had no problems selling mine when I upgraded my RAM.

As far as I am aware, there is no such thing as 16 GB sticks of 204 pin memory at this time.
And while there could be something new out there I haven't seen - since the current 27" iMacs max out at 32 GB - I wouldn't spend my money on 16 GB sticks until it's been tried and proven to work by someone else. I am sure that "if" it is possible OWC would have already tried.

You would need to use 4 x 8 GB sticks to max out the memory at 32 GB.

See everymac.com and select the model you are considering buying. Yes, the current 27" iMacs are all considered "late 2012" models as that was the introduction date.

^^^^ what he said

The 240 pin sticks will not fit in an iMac - it uses notebook SODIMM 204 pin sticks.
