I am in desperate need of some help trying to diagose what is wrong with my 1.5GHZ PB G4 12" 1.25GB RAM.

I just installed a fresh copy of 10.4 after zeroing out the HDD (Done from RETAIL CD as I no longer have the orig system disks.

All installed ok with no errors.

When I boot into the OS, I either get the message saying I need to restart my computer by holding down the power button. Or, it will boot up to the grey apple with the whirling wheel and then just go to a blank blue screen and no further not even to the welcome video.

I have tried single user mode and verbose mode and no errors have appeared.

Swapped out the RAM and this has not resolved it.

Reset the PRAM and NVRAM and this has not resolved it.

Repaired the HDD permissions and this has not resolved it.

I have just tried safe boot and that logs me in fine.

However, what do I do now to get in normally?

This is what I get from the console App when I look at the system logs:

Is there anything in the information that I got from the Console App that indicates what is causing the problem as I do not understand all the rows of text and what they mean?

I downloaded an AHT disk from the apple support website and that doesn't even boot.

I installed TECH TOOL PRO when in safe mode and ran the various hardware tests with that and nothing failed.

Also, this is weird, when I tried to install 10.5 I could never get the DVD to fully load hence why I only installed 10.4.

Thanks

Garry

Sounds like your computer is experiencing kernel panics. Have you installed any new ram lately?

No nothing new installed.

I am now getting something weird when I boot into safe mode, it goes to a screen that just says:

Darwin/BSD (garry-westwells-powerbook-g4-12) (console)

login:

What does this all mean?

Also, what does this mean:

12 /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/ATSServer: (-3230) Cannot use ATS Persistent Store - switching to old FODB cache code

Just so we know. Have you had this computer for a while...and was it working fine BEFORE this fresh install of OS 10.4.

Or...is this a computer you purchased recently...which already had this problem...and what we are really trying to do is solve a pre-existing condition (pre-existing to your ownership of the computer)?

Thanks

Have you had this computer for a while (IT'S A USED PB AND ONLY HAD IT FOR ONE WEEK)...and was it working fine BEFORE this fresh install of OS 10.4 (THE HDD WAS WIPED CLEAN WHEN I GOT THE PB AND HAD NO OS INSTALLED)

Looks like we are trying to solve a pre-existing condition (pre-existing to my ownership of the computer)?

Why are you YELLING (all caps)??:(

I'm a bit confused. If the Powerbooks HD was wiped clean when you got it...and you also mentioned that it was running fine for 1 week...how was it working fine for 1 week...before the recent fresh install of 10.4?

What I'm asking is...if the PB's HD was wiped clean when you got it. How was it running fine for 1 week (how was an OS installed before the recent fresh install of 10.4)?

And if it was running fine for 1 week...why was it necessary to do a fresh install of OS 10.4?

Thanks

Sorry I wasn't yelling just trying to highlight my replies.
I think I have confused matters as well along the way.
I have not been able to get this powerbook running at all since I go it apart from in safe mode only.
I think I have also done something whilst looking through various forums and ended up making it boot into console mode as well....
As soon as I got the PB I zero'd out the HDD and installed 10.4 fresh, infact I have reinstalled it twice since

The reason why I asked if this computer was working fine (while in your possession) is...it makes a BIG difference when trying to solve a problem...if the computer owner knows if the computer worked fine BEFORE a problem arose.

In many cases (when folks buy a used computer very cheaply)...it's because the computer had a problem...and now the new owner is "rolling the dice" hoping that they can solve the problem...and end up with a perfectly working computer for very little money.

Here's what I can suggest:

- Boot the computer with the OS install disk you have (OS 10.4 I'm assuming).
- Open Disk Utility and reformat the PB's HD
- Then install OS 10.4.

Obviously if this is what you did already...then I guess you could skip this step.

Since the computer has NEVER worked while in your ownership...I'm going to suggest that maybe the ram in it is "bad/defective"...or it's the wrong ram for the computer. This is one reason why I asked about the ram initially.

One thing you can do before purchasing new ram is...remove the ram...and reinstall it. This "reseating" may get things working.

If this doesn't fix things...then try a PRAM and a PMU reset:

About NVRAM and PRAM
Resetting PowerBook and iBook Power Management Unit (PMU)

If trying everything I mentioned above doesn't fix things...then I'm thinking that you need to purchase some ram (ram you know 100% works with this 12" PB). This is not a 100% guarantee...it's simply a troubleshooting step.

It is always possible that something is wrong with the logic board on this computer...and no matter what we try will fix things. And if this is the case...then this computer is ready for the junk heap (or sold as a parts computer on e-Bay)...since a replacement logic board usually is not worth the cost versus the current market value of the computer.

To add to my post above...I just remembered that a 12" 1.5ghz PB has 256meg of ram soldered onto the logic board. And that minimally OS 10.4 only needs 256meg of ram.

The 12" 1.5ghz PB has a single ram expansion slot. If there is a stick of ram in the ram slot...then remove it. Then try to reboot the computer.

- If the computer boots fine...then the installed ram is bad.
- If the computer does not boot fine from just the 256meg of logic board ram...then there may be a problem with the logic board.

Yep tried that with just booting up with just the soldered 256MB RAM and it still only boots in safe mode.
Whilst I was in safe mode I installed Tech Tool Pro 4 and ran all the hardware tests and everything tested fine with no errors including the RAM. Have you any idea what this means at the end of the concole system report:

12 /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framewo rk/Support/ATSServer: (-3230) Cannot use ATS Persistent Store - switching to old FODB cache code

Have you any idea what this means at the end of the concole system report:

Nope...no idea.

All I can say is...various hardware checking programs (Tech Tool 4, Disk Utility, Apple Hardware Test, etc.)...can & do report no errors/problems...even though they still can exist. Just mentioning that...before there is a 100% assumption that there are no hardware problems.

But assuming that there are no hardware problems...I sure hope no one messed around with something in the firmware or used "Terminal" to change settings. Because these are problems that are harder to figure out.

To be honest I'm still leaning towards a hardware problem (due to the kernel panic listed in post #1). This is assuming that the OS install was a good one (proper disk/disks used).

- Nick

p.s. One thing else I can say. If the computer operates ok when booting from the OS install disk...maybe there's something wrong with the HD. You could try installing the OS on an external HD...and booting from it...and see if the computer boots ok. This will help determine if the internal HD has a problem (very likely on an older computer such as this).

Ok cool I can try and get hold of another HDD and try that.
How can I check that things are ok within the firmware and have not been messed up?

As far as I know...messing with the firmware & changing settings with Terminal...are big black holes. Not something to be meddled with for the novice. I'm not sure there is a straight forward way of checking/confirming things.

I'm not necessarily saying you did something...but possibly a previous owner did something. I'm not saying something WAS done with the firmware or Terminal...just throwing it out there as an idea if nothing else solves the problem.

The previous owner said he had Linux installed, could he have messed with the firmware for that I wonder?
