hey guys

i heard mac has a built in app for scanning for malware. i was wondering how i run a general scan

Just keep your copy of OS X up to date with the latest downloads from Apple which include security updates. Use the built in software update. You don't need any special scanning software.

The OP is referring to XProtect, which is not part of the updates you see in software update. Apple updates it silently and no user interaction is possible or needed. You hold up your end of the bargain and stay away from dodgy sites, it will hold up its end of the bargain and disable the malware.
