Hi, my girlfriend's macbook recently had it's hard drive die and I'm currently trying to use a restore from an external hard drive. I formatted the new hard drive using the disk utility and am now trying to get the restore to work from the utilities menu. Is this the best way to do this? I'm good with PCs but have not used macs much. Any help would be appreciated!

what version of osx are you trying to restore

You can boot from an external drive if it is mac formatted by holding down the alt key at startup

Has the external got an installation image of OSX or is it a cloned copy of here original mac hard drive?

And the operating system on the external will need to be the same, or later, that that which came with the MacBook originally. No going backwards with operating systems.
