snow leopard safari not loading pages successfully so in a fit of pique i reset safari and didn't realise that the ticked box 'website data' means you lose all bookmarks (why they don't call the box 'bookmarks' is beyond me....but there you go).
so.....ten years of extensive archiving lost. not so (a friend tells me).....simply go to time machine and restore from there. hurrah. no.....not hurrah. i enter time machine, i go to last back-up.....no safari folder anywhere.....or in any previous back up. i search 'bookmarks' - nothing. i search 'bookmarks.plist' (after scouring forums on subject). nothing. library-cahce is empty.
hammer ready in hand.....macbook pro first, wd-passport next.....then into town to smash shop windows.
my mac-guru friend len is stumped.

There's no Safari folder in /Library in your user folder in Time Machine?
Should be there. I don't think Snow Leopard hides the Library folder though I could be wrong.

apparently it's because i was looking in the wrong 'library' folder. i was looking in macintosh SSD then library. what i should have been looking in was Mac SSD, users, my name, library.
ha ha.....apple has two folders which have exactly the same name......and i'm an idiot for thinking that the folders were the same. one is a user library and the other is a system library. so....a question.....am i stating the obvious by suggesting that apple call them by different names?

anyway, problem solved....it took 3 seconds.

Not sure how you would have lost the bookmarks, but the box 'Remove website data' does not remove bookmarks.

To get to the Library folder in Time Machine:

Open Finder to your users Library folder - not the root library folder - then open Time Machine.

TM should open directly in the Library folder. Then navigate to Preferences - com.apple.safari.plist on the date you wish.

edit: beat me to it, glad you got it restored.

Apple has nothing to do with -- or control over -- the multiple Library files. This is a fundamental function of UNIX, which is a multiuser system. Thus each user -- and on every Mac there are at least two (the system and you, the administrator) -- has its own Library folder.

dude....thanks for getting back to me so quickly. the 'library' double name really did my head in. do you know much about safari and why it's not loading pages? it kinda half loads then i wait....and wait....and then apple-N when it doesn't respond quickly enough. it happens mostly using google maps and particularly streetview.....the yellow man greys out when i drag him to the porn shop. actually, come to think of it...maybe he's putting on the grey suit so he doesn't draw attention.....and i'm like 'dude - just show me the front door'.

There are at least these three:

HD/Library
HD/System/Library
HD/Users/UserName/Library

And there may be a separate one for Administrator as stated above; really, one for each user account.

And not to be pedantic, but the folders do have different names. One is:

/MacintoshSSD/Library

and the other is

/MacintoshSSD/Users/{name}/Library

Those are paths, not names. They're all named Library.

I agree.

I did say it was pedantic. The path is required to give a full file name.
Just continuing on the theme... The path is required to give the location. (And in this case, we're talking about a folder's name, not a file.) Not that it matters; just following the flow here.
