I am interested in using the OUTLOOK.COM service because the webmail UI is wonderful, and it provides a seemless iPhone connection quite easily.

BUT....

I like to use a desktop email / contacts / calendar client on my MAC, and it seems that Microsoft has not provided support for such things (except perhaps Outlook 2013 for Windows. it supports POP3 (yuck!), but that is about it beyond that great web UI.

Has anybody found a solution to this problem? Maybe a sync tool of some sort or a two step connection through GMAIL, or something else creative but reliable?

Thanks,
Steve

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you really really like the webUI why not use that?

If you want to use a client then you can use Mail.

Sorry if I've missed the mark.

At home I like a client. But they only seem to support pop, which won't even allow my contacts and cal to be in sync. When I am out of the house, I would use their web UI.

That's not a client limitation is an outlook.com limitation. They only support POP for desktop use.

I understand that. What I was asking for is a creative, perhaps indirect solution, or some tool that supports Active Sync, or some other ideas on how to make this bad situation better.

If they don't expose a sync interface for you to use (they don't) then you're stuck. Any work around (all I can think of is something that emulates a mobile device - but I can't find anything to support the existence of such a thing) is liable to break as the service evolves. One of your criteria was robust. In my experience of the msn.com/hotmail.com/outlook.com platform is not that robust. Consistent the service is not..... and I've had an account with them for many years.

If you really like the UI I'd say use that directly. If a client and a robust sync solution is of higher priority I'd look to towards gmail and it's peers that use IMAP/cardDAV/calDAV

Happy to be corrected but I can't see anything on there that will help in this instance. Active sync on desktops only works on Outlook 2013 afaik

No need for a tool - Outlook.com supports ActiveSync (see here for details).

In order for this to work for me, I would need a tool that will utilize ActiveSync to sync data with some desktop client - most do not support ActiveSync the way mobile clients do. That was what I was hoping someone might have identified.
