Mac not reading USB during boot (while holding alt/option)

So I need my mac to be able to read USBs when I boot my mac while holding alt/option. On my older mac, this does not happen, and I can not see the USB, while on my newer mac I can see the usb during alt/option boot. They are both running mountain lion, so how can I get my older mac to show the USb during boot

How old is your older Mac? Which model?

Some older hardware just doesn't have the required built in support for booting from a USB device.
