I'm finally tired enough of the constant beach ball to upgrade my RAM (before installing Snow Leopard) but I'm confused At Crucial site after its search of my Mac it says 4GB package (2x2GB) @ $71 is correct choice BUT if I enter Crucial from ultimate discount 5%coupon site and perform same Crucial evaluation I get 8GB package (2x4GB) again @ $71 is correct choice. Seems it hinges on whether my Mac is early or late 2008 model and I can't tell what mine is. I do have the serial # and somewhere it seems that their should be a list of the goats and sheep by serial #. Help?

Well if you provide the model type (iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Pro etc etc) and number that will help enormously. If you click on the operating system under 'About this Mac' this will supply the serial number. A utility such as MacTracker will help with those goats and sheep of yours. OWC and Crucial are recommended here.

It's late so the following could be wrong. From the serial number it appears that you have the 15" MacBook Pro. If that's correct, and I'm not too tired, that particular model can take as much as 6 GB of memory..

The official limit is 4 GB but if these guys say 6 GB they're probably right. The limit on my machine was 4 GB initially. Shortly after its release these guys said it could take 6GB and now it is up to 8 GB Presumably because higher density chips became available. They've been right about my machine. I put 8 GB in recently with no issues.

My copy of Mactracker says it can take 6 GB. Apple states 4 GB.
Yes, but I didn't want to possibly confuse the OP with the 6GB option.
