Website Fonts now Italicized

I'm running 10.6.8.

I was receiving some "bad font" warnings when opening certain documents, and some fonts were not displaying properly. Using Font Book, I deleted the duplicate fonts. Then I deleted the Microsoft Font folder (but I saved it).

Then certain web pages on 3 browsers started showing up with only Italic fonts. I put the fonts back that I deleted, restarted the computer, but the italic font issue remains.

It's not all websites, but some, e.g. The New York Times.

Any (simple) solutions?

Here is some info on my fonts:
- HD/User/Library/Fonts : Empty
- HD/Library/Fonts : 333 fonts
- HD/System/Library/Fonts : 38 fonts
- HD/Library/Fonts/Microsoft : Deleted
- HD/System/......../ProtectedFonts : 9 fonts

Chrome Font Settings : I changed these several times and restarted my computer but there is no difference.
MS Office/Pages /Mail : No apparent problems

Its probably more to do with font caches

Use Onyx (a mac maintenance app) to delete all the application font caches and see if that cures it

I launched Onyx, which seems to be integral to Font Book 'cause FB was opened when I opend Onyx. However, I saw no options to clear the cache either in Onyx or FB.

Not sure what happened there but Onyx isn't really integrated into Font Book. You can find Onyx here.. You need the version for 10.6 third from the top I think).

Which browsers? Various browsers have custom font settings and it might be worth looking at those to see if there are any changes.

Safari: not possible unless you use a custom stylesheet (why Apple removed this option is beyond me).
Chrome: Preferences > Show advanced settings... > Web Content > Customize Fonts...
Firefox: Preferences > Content > Fonts & Colours.

I tried the three you mention:

- Safari: not too concerned as I don't use it much
- Chrome: Made changes there, but there was no effect as mentioned in my first post.
- Firefox: I changed the font, but the only way to "override" the italics (regardless the font I chose) was to uncheck the box "allow web pages to choose their own fonts..." So for Firefox this is a solution.

But for Chrome, which I use most often, I can't see that type of option, and can't seem to get past things being italic.

Thanks everyone, Onyx worked! And I feel like such an idiot, when you said Onyx I typed that into Spotlight and there was an Onyx - but it was a font! (no wonder it launched FB). Anyway, I downloaded the actual Onyx program, and ran the utility as you described.

Problem solved. Thanks again....
