I recently bought a "broken" late 2008 aluminum unibody macbook from my uncle. His daughter had *spilled soy sauce* on the computer* (Don't even ask me how this happens). It ruined the computer, and upon taking it apart I saw the issue was the magsafe and the logic board. I bought the computer for 60 dollars, (It coming with the charger) and decided to fix it. I bought and installed a new magsafe and a *USED but "100%" working logic board* on ebay. I installed all of these and the computer worked for a while, I had no issues or complaints other than the computer getting very loud sometimes to what seemed to be a non power hogging application. After taking the computer to school for the while I started getting kernel panics where the screen would go from top town, with the big shut off button and 4 languages. I would restart the computer and minutes after logging in it would happen again. Now what happens is I'll start the computer, be able to use it for less than 5 minutes and than I'll get a kernel panic. I'll restart the computer and upon the grey screen my computer will start beeping. If I leave the computer alone for a while I can come back and log on for a bit but than this will repeat.

Do you know why this is happening?

Do I need to reinstall Lion?
Do I have bad ram?
Is my logic board crap?
Any chance my hard drive is causing this?

It's gotten all of its updates from the utility updater...
I would greatly appreciate all help possible.
Here is an example of one of the Kernel Panic logs:

Update.

Sometimes when I start it up the hard drive will just keep repeating its -bzz zz- start up noise over and over.

Liquid spills (soy sauce in this case)...can sometimes effect many parts...but generally (as you've done) replacing the logic board is usually the #1 part that goes bad. If the spill was large (large volume)...then more parts can be effected.

Ram is usually a big problem area as well. Maybe the ram was effected by the spill...or maybe something was up with the ram before the spill (bad ram or wrong ram). At this point you could try reseating the ram...and/or...testing the computer with just one stick of ram in at a time (assuming the computer has 2 sticks of ram in it currently).

The other question is...how do you know 100% that the logic board has no problems. I'm a big fan of taking advantage of great deals via e-Bay...but just because a seller says that the logic board is working 100%...doesn't always mean is is 100% good. The seller could be "fibbing"...or may not even realize something was wrong with it.

The one positive test that a logic board had no issues...is to have no issues!;) Since you're having issues...that logic board could be bad...or there could be something else wrong with the computer post soy sauce spill.

HTH,

- Nick

I agree with Nick. Bad memory and or the hard drive - two places to start digging. (Could be both.)

So I took one stick out and now it's working perfectly! Does that mean that I got a 50/50 guess right and one stick is bad? Or that one slot is bad? Or it can only handle 2gb of ram?
Thanks!

You won't really know until you replace the modules. Also do this: Buy a can of compressed air and blow out both memory slots with a couple of short blasts. And be sure to check that hard drive if it's making noise!

So I took one stick out and now it's working perfectly! Does that mean that I got a 50/50 guess right and one stick is bad? Or that one slot is bad? Or it can only handle 2gb of ram?
Thanks!

Now that you got the computer running with just one stick of ram installed. The way to tell if you have a bad stick of ram or a bad ram slot...take the "good" stick of ram that is in it (let's call this slot #1)...remove it...and install it in the other empty slot (slot #2).

Restart the computer. If it's stable...then both ram slots should be good...as well as the 1 stick of ram. Of course if the computer is not stable after switching the ram into the other slot (slot #2)...then ram slot #2 may be bad.

To double check things...take the 2nd stick of ram (the stick that was removed)...and put it into either slot. If from the tests above it looks like both slots are ok...then this 2nd stick of ram (if it's bad) should kernel panic the computer in either slot.

p.s. A "Late 2008" Unibody MacBook has a max. ram of 8gig.
