Is there any way I can get my Mac to add the suffix .png to screenshots auromatically so I don't have to keep adding it manually every time?

The system already adds the .png "extension" to screenshots automatically. There is no need to be adding it yet again.

If you want to "see" the extensions of all your files, you need to open:
Finder
Preferences
Advanced tab
place a check mark next to 'Show all file name extensions'.

Once you do that, you're going to find that your previously taken screenshots where you added the extension will now be named "whatever.png.png".

Thank you for pointing that out. I can't imagine why on earth it wasn't turned on by Apple when I bought the thing! Files without the extensions showing refuse to perform all sorts of functions, so it would seem logical to ship the product with it on. Indeed I can't think why anyone would want to turn it off!!

What kinds of problems are you having when extensions are turned off? I keep file extensions off about 99% of the time and rarely have issues that can be traced to that.

I do not now, nor have I ever had that option turned on in a permanent fashion.
Have never had any issue with being able to manipulate my files in any way.
Also, don't have an issue with knowing what app is required for opening any file type on my Macs since they all open automatically in the default app.

(Not to suggest I am ignorant of file types. There are many cases where knowledge of the file type may be required, but generally don't have issues of knowing whether a particular file might be a raw, jpg, png, bmp, etc.)

They would only refuse to perform if the user had at some point gone in and used a different application than the default to work with a file &/or changed their preferences for the file type and which app should be used and later deleted/changed that app.

Ex. pdf files - would normally open with Preview - those that have installed some other pdf reader/writer, whether Adobe's or other, "might" run into issues with which app is the default for opening a pdf.

Let us know what specific issue you're having. Someone may be able to assist with that.

Same reason why Microsoft does the same exact thing with Windows.... Less confusion for novice users of the operating system. :p

I turned on 'show file extensions' but it doesn't seem to apply retrospectively as you describe, none of my Word docs, other files or existing screenshots have acquired extensions, I still need to add them.

The extension is there whether you can see it or not, IOW.

Chas has said it all…..

Maybe a screenshot would help.

Have you tried Repairing Permissions via Disk Utility ?? Or With Oynx or MainMenu 1.7.4 Don't update it, but configure the Batch Task's, check them all and run the full suite and same with Oynx, as these 2 do a deeper clean in OS X so if they are still not showing try to Repair Permissions and get back to us

When we sent Word docs with no extensions showing to a PC user he couldn't open them, but he could after we'd added the extensions and sent them again. So there is more going on here than you suggest.

Do what i suggested then, download either Oynx or the MainMenu i linked you too and run the full bowl of scripts which will Repair Permissions on your HD (disk) and get back to us.
Ill look around and see what .plist you might want to trash as well
