I do not now, nor have I ever had that option turned on in a permanent fashion.
Have never had any issue with being able to manipulate my files in any way.
Also, don't have an issue with knowing what app is required for opening any file type on my Macs since they all open automatically in the default app.
(Not to suggest I am ignorant of file types. There are many cases where knowledge of the file type may be required, but generally don't have issues of knowing whether a particular file might be a raw, jpg, png, bmp, etc.)
They would only refuse to perform if the user had at some point gone in and used a different application than the default to work with a file &/or changed their preferences for the file type and which app should be used and later deleted/changed that app.
Ex. pdf files - would normally open with Preview - those that have installed some other pdf reader/writer, whether Adobe's or other, "might" run into issues with which app is the default for opening a pdf.
Let us know what specific issue you're having. Someone may be able to assist with that.
