Can' t Transfer files to an external hard drive

Tried drag and dropping and copy and pasting. Also switched to Mac from Windows. I don't want re-format or format my hard drive.

Well, if your external hard is formatted to NTFS (which it probably is) you're either going to have to format it for your Mac or purchase a driver so you can write to it. Mac OS X can read but not write to NTFS. Paragon Software sells a driver which we recommend - price is $19.95. You can purchase it from here.
