I have a MacBook Pro 17", 5 years old; I upgraded OS, and since then some of the display fonts are too big to be read easily - an example in System Preferences is shown below. Does anybody know how to correct this?

You have either disabled Lucida Grande or your font caches have become messed up

The system fonts are in HD > LIbrary > Fonts

If the font cache is messed up download ONyx and clean the font caches

Or, reset your MacBook Pro to its native resolution if it was changed. Do that from System Preferences, Displays.
