Oh my lord, ive been using the screen spaining hack for quite some time, and today I accidentally clicked on the displays icon in the menu bar and i saw "1600x1200" in the selection list of resolutions for my other monitor,I clicked on it and WHOA!

1600x1200,has this been possible before and ive just not seen it?...or have I just found some major flaw that no one,not even apple thought was possible?..I think I have.

Im not going to unplug my ibook, ever, from my other monitor in fear i might lose my 1600 res.

i have noticed that if a monitor can handle a higher resolution that it will be able to be selected in the displays preferences. the hack works great for me

doesn't that extra-high resolution make your screen icons really small? I think that resolution would make me have to squint to see anything.

YES,exspecially on a 17 inch monitor, and its hogging almost all my v-ram and shooting up my cpu at times because the ibook was only intended to be used at 1024 and im pushing it to 1600....but how can the ibooks video card even handle 1600x1400 ,i thought it would explode if i tryed to push it this far....

imo i dont like really using the screen hack because performance suffers... 1024x768 is fine for most purposes i think. i use the clamshell hack on the screen spanning doctor to put all 32 mb vram on my external display, and at 1280x1024 its still a little bit choppy after awhile.

Most graphics cards can do 1600 quite easily, so it doesn't really surprise me that the ATI Radeon in the iBook can as well... If your monitor can go that far, why not?

Obviously though performance is an issue :)

If you'll take a gander HERE. You'll see that even for 1600X1200 at 24 Bit color...you only need 6MB of VRAM in 2D resolutions. Of course...we're not talking about games with things like buffering/page flipping/anti-aliasing/etc...But just regular everyday OS activities...yes...you can do 1600X1200 with only 6 MB of VRAM...certainly the iBook even with a split up bank of 32MB of VRAM can handle that.

By the way...for what it's worth...

1600 X 1200 X 24-bit = 46,080,000 bits
46,080,000 bits @ 8 bits per byte = 5,760,000 bytes
5,760,000 bytes @ 1024 bytes per kilobyte = 5,625 Kb
5,625 Kb @ 1024 Kb per Mb = 5.493... Mb

I think the 32 Mb of VRAM in the iBook is pretty sufficient...but once again...we're only talking in 2D resolutions with no fancy tricks...

I am using my iBook right now with 1024x768 on my iBook screen and 1680x1050 on my 20.1" widescreen. Both running at 24bit.
I dont really see any performance issues with this for regular work.
If I kick in the RSS screen saver on both screens it does slow down, but if I specify my big screen as the only one to use it runs fine at the high res.
1600x1200 is not a widescreen res so it does run but stretches my display. I use 1680x1050 for my widescreen monitor.

BTW: My iBook is only a couple of months old 1.33 G4 and I have 1.5Gb of Ram. But still only 32MB Vram on a 9550 ATI.

The powerbooks can do this anyway, no need for a hack!
