I have a 2006 MacBook Pro 17" Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.6.8 and wonder if I can partition my 750GB hard drive so as to install OS Lion on the 2nd partition. Is this advisable?

Welcome to the forum.

Advisable? It won't do any harm. Depends if its what you want.

It's pretty straightforward.

1. Backup your system
2. Use Disk Utility to add a partition
3. Download Lion from the Mac App Store (assuming you've purchased it in the past - it's not available now Mountain Lion is out)
4. Use liondiskmaker to create a bootable USB or DVD
5. Reboot holding option
6. Select the lion boot disk
7. Choose to install on your new partition

And Mountain Lion OS X.8 will not install on a 2006 MacBook Pro so you will have had to purchase Lion previously as mrplow suggests. A USB flash drive with Lion was sold through Apple stores and you may be able to find one on auction sites etc.
