Trash bin notifications will not clear

For over 6 months the (number) notification at the top of my trash bin has increased and now stands at "10." My trash bin is completely empty and I've done everything from refresh to restore. Again, when I open up my mail, the trash is showing there is trash in there, but it's empty. How can I get this reset this zero? Thanks!

Screen shot? Are we talking System trash or Mail trash?
