Hello,

I have an early 2009 unibody silver MacBook pro. It stays on the spinning logo and gray screen on load up.

I have tried resetting nvram/pram, starting in safe mode and I still get nothing.

I have replaced the hard drive but it is not recognized.

I called apple support, gave them the computer serial number and told them that I didn't have the original installation discs. They sent me what they said I needed which is the leopard 10.5 retail installation dvd.

I put the dvd in the drive, held c and got the installation dvd to appear. I select it and the computer just reboots over and over. I can not get to any type of installation screen.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

Did you format the new hard drive before attempting to install the OS (Mac OS Extended Journaled)?

I did, but now it does not recognize the hdd when c is pressed while booting.

This is what I would do if you haven't done thins already:

- boot the computer from the OS install disk (press "c" key on startup)
- once booted...launch Disk Utility
- format the HD with Disk Utility (Mac OS Extended Journaled)
- quit Disk Utility
- install the Mac OS

HTH,

- Nick

Whenever changing the drive change the cable chscag refers to. Time and heat make it extremely brittle and liable to small fracture.

Would that be why I can not even get the "c" to work to show the cd player? I called applecare and they couldn't figure it out. Thank you for all of the posts also!

Well keep us posted and if this is the correct response we will send our bill of a dozen bottles of beer in the mail.

You said this in post #1:

I put the dvd in the drive, held c and got the installation dvd to appear.

This to me this sounded like the optical drive (the CD/DVD drive) was working fine...since you said "got the installation dvd to appear."

Now you're saying:

Would that be why I can not even get the "c" to work to show the cd player?

So I guess before we try to solve the problems with the new hard drive...I think that we need to clearly find out whether your computers optcial drive is working or not.

If your computers optical drive is not working...then of course the OS installation disk cannot be booted from...in order to do the OS install on the new HD.
