• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Converting DVD's into mpegs

Are there any free programs that I could use in order to backup my dvds on to my external hd?

I have roughly 150 dvds, and I wouldn't mind having some of my favorite ones on my comp for quick access.

I have mactheripper but that only breaks it into video_ts and audio_ts and the folders are generally like 8gb in size.

Anything?

After mac the ripper use Handbrake (google it, its the first item and its free) and that will convert it to avi or mp4 for you

Yes Handbrake is great but if your going to put the DVD on an ipod then I suggest using quicktime to resize the mpeg to 320x240 otherwise handbrake will squish the frame a little.

Yeah but it would always make the length and width uneven when I used it.

did you adjust the width first? if you set the height to 240 the width could be screwed up

ffmpegX, great program but you need to know which .vob's on the DVD make up the movie.

So what should he have done? Set the height first, then width? Thanks.

No you set the width first.

There are all sorts of dimensions for movies to be produced in, but all of them the width is what usually changes more. If you set the width to the correct width the height will come out fine. If you set it by the height on a wide screen film it will end up trying to squeeze too much into the width
