Why are you trying to open the firmware upgrade in VLC? It's likely a .BIN file or something and you should be using whatever tool you have for the camera to the do the upgrade. Safari has a tendency of opening any downloaded files, disable that by going to Preferences->General and unchecking the "Open 'safe' files after downloading" option..

Are you using Safari? The aforementioned tip works wonders for Safari but if you're using a different browser, you'll have to configure that one.

Initially I was using Google Chrome, then I tried Safari following Razoredge's suggestion. VLC took over yet again!

Chrome doesn't open files automatically so I'm not sure why VLC is being executed when something is done downloading. Regardless, in the meantime, just close VLC and then proceed to install the firmware as per the instructions for your camera.

VLC is closed. It just automatically activates when I download the firmware regardless of using Safari or Chrome. The icon comes on while downloading!

What format is the firmware file in? Can you tell us the file name? The reason I ask is that most cameras which install a firmware update will only do it through Windows, not OS X. I suspect that's why VLC is opening.

I think you're right chscag. Anyway, I've managed to get round the issue by downloading the file (FPUPDATE.DAT), copying it onto the root directory of the memory card and then inserting it into the camera. The camera has since been updated and seems to work well enough with the new features. It took a while to get there, but as it always seems to be with these weird problems, went without a hitch thereafter.

Big thanks for your help!
