2010 MBP stalls at user login screen

1. Boot up is extremely slow. Spinning beach ball last for minutes and minutes. Once at login screen keyboard is in op. Trackpad still works.
2. Can't access any user accounts.
3. Zapped PRAM. Reset SMC.
4. Used Ctrl+R at startup to access Mountain Lion recovery mode.
5. Accessed Disk Utility. Verify gave up and said Try Repair. Repair said something along the lines of boot sector in op. Try Re-Format.

ANY suggestions before I give up on this hunk of junk, just reformat and install latest Mountain Lion?

All symptoms of a defective hard drive. Swap the hard drive for a new one. If you neglected to make backups, there's a good possibility you've lost your data.
