I'm pretty new to this forum. Where is the best place to post an error report so I can get some information about what's going on? It's for a MacBook Pro.

Just include it in your thread. This is for a kernel panic?

Uninstall Avast today. There are no Mac OS X viruses. Let's know how you go then. If you feel you must have AV software if you are from a Windows background, download ClamXAV which is freeware.

Let's try this:

Boot your machine to safe boot mode. Hold down the shift key as soon as you hear the chime noise and keep holding it until you see the spinning wheel. Safe boot disables all startup programs and third party drivers. It also disables the sound and does a verify on the hard drive. If your Mac operates OK in safe mode without going into panic, that may indicate a software or driver problem. Let us know.

Okay, done! It did alright in safe boot mode, until I tried to get on Google Chrome and tell you that it did alright in safe boot mode =P. I ended up with another kernel panic, and was having trouble getting it to start up into normal mode without it panicking again. Finally got back on after about three tries. Should I do a hardware test? How do I do that?

Yes, it's time to run the Apple Hardware Test. Boot the machine with your Snow Leopard DVD and hold down the "d" key. I'm beginning to think that you might be getting a memory error. Have you recently added memory to your MBP? Anyway, post the results of the hardware test.

You could also be running into a flaky hard drive. A hard drive that's borderline failing can and will cause kernel panics. Next, we can try checking the hard drive.

That's a memory error as I suspected. Have you recently added memory to your MacBook Pro? Anyway, try opening up the machine and re-seating the memory modules. In other words, remove them one at a time and push them back into their slots. If you don't want to do it yourself, have someone help you.

I did recently put in new RAM, so I replaced it with the old RAM and did a hardware test again and it came up clean. I'll take it back and see if I can get some that will work better. =) Thanks for your help!!! <3 I really appreciate it!

Well it is there if you know where to look on Google:-

Apple Hardware Test detected an error

Macs are very fussy about memory specifications and need low density memory whereas PC's use high density in the majority of cases. Was the memory sold and/or installed by a Mac specialist?

You're welcome. The new memory modules might in fact be OK but were not seated properly. That sometimes occurs with new modules because of slight differences in dimensions. I know that they're supposed to be uniform, but unfortunately not all suppliers are reliable. You did the right thing by returning them. We recommend buying memory from either Crucial or OWC.
