Using a canon 8400f scanner

Hi guys, I'm trying to run my canon 8400f scanner on the mac version 10.8 mountain lion. I have downloaded a driver from canon for an earlier version of mac but the driver doesn't have all the functions for scanning negatives - it will do the job sort of but doesn't allow for black and white negatives-
I'm wondering if there are better drivers out there somewhere - if so where should I be looking?

Thanks louishen, the vuescan software wasn't able to do the negatives but your encouragement caused me to look a bit further. The canon had another box to tick which took me to advanced settings and allowed me to set for black and white negatives
