Can anyone explain (or give me an information source) the differences between ethernet, Fire Wire, Airport and WiFi.
This knowledge will greatly enhance my understanding as to how my various devices link up (and make sense of the settings I am asked to make).
Very grateful for any help here.

Welcome to Mac-Forums..

Read through..

Ethernet
FireWire
AirPort
Bluetooth
Wi-Fi

Airport is Apple's implementation of WiFi support on their devices.

If you have more specific questions then we can answer them, otherwise, Google and Wikipedia can help you a lot.
