Can I install Snow Leopard over 10.5 (original OS on my MBP...this is the model before Apple used flat keys for the keyboard) without doing a clean install? I know doing a clean install is always the best way...but a PITA.

If you have the Snow Leopard retail disc, you can use that to upgrade your existing Leopard installation without having to do a clean install..

Yes I have the retail disc. Just want to make sure I won't end up affecting how certain apps run.

You're OK with Snow Leopard since it still preserves the facility of running PPC apps, but was targeting Intel-based Macs. You will likely not run into any issues with apps, it's with Lion (10.7) that PPC support was dropped and you have to worry about apps not running..

Ok thanks Raz0rEdge. I guess the day will come when my MBP might need a clean install.

My MBP is running Intel 2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo chips. So I guess I could install 10.7 on top of 10.6. Don't know if I'll bother though.

Yup, you can go as high as Lion, but again be aware of the PowerPC limitation and if it affects your apps, then stick with Snow Leopard..
