I am using an iMac with 10.8.3 Mountain Lion and would like to use an external hard drive with Snow Leopard installed on it. Is it possible to use that HD for Time Machine? Any help is most appreciated.

Yes it's possible but not recommended. In order to use it for Time Machine in addition to Snow Leopard, it's best to partition it.

What is your recommendation? I have tried the partition route with no success.

If you divide the external hard drive into two partitions, one for Snow Leopard and the second for Time Machine, it should work. Just make sure the second partition is formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled and name it something that you can point the TM program to.
