ok. the 20d comes with the standard 18-55. if a want another lens...my budget is somewhat limited...what would you reccommend? will i want a 70-300 or is a 28-105 a good supplement to a 18-55. if the 28-105 is good would i want IS on that? i'm pretty new to all of this.

btw thanks for all your help tonight.

I don't think the extra 50mm is really worth purchasing a new lense for if you have the 18-55. A 70-200, 28-300 or 100-300 would be much more beneficial for you in the long run.

The IS is very helpful in sports shooting; without it you are basically adding an f stop to the lense from the constant moving so the IS really will save pictures. For the abstract landscape stuff the IS isn't as important because you can get the camera steady.

Take look into some other brands of lenses besides Canon to see if you can save yourself some money for the first lense. I got a Sigma 28-300 as my first lense because it was cheaper than a Canon...it did the job and I still use it occasionally.

Try e-bay. I found a 55-200 lens for my Nikon, made by a 3rd party vendor not Nikor, for $80 including shipping. The lens when new was $190 or so.

go with less zoom range. you'll get better quality. I bought the tamron 28-75 f2.8. What a great lens for my 20D! I'd go with something similar, then save a lil more and get the 70-200L f4 or the 2.8 or is of the same model! Although the later is some big $$$$!

Just remember the lens is the most important part of the camera.. Dont buy a cheap one.. as you will have terrible results. I would save up some money and definately get some L glass. Sure it might be expensive, but trust me, its worth every penny.

My bank account was very upset with me after a 4 month span of getting the 20D, 100-400 L f/4.5-5.6 IS, 70-200 L f/2.8 IS. But they are soooo nice
