MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012)

Is it possible to do dual monitors without an external device or do you need an external card to drive both monitors? (Say I need to do 2, 23" monitors external and no internal display)

You can drive one external monitor from your 2012 rMBP. To drive two 23" external monitors at the same time you'll need additional hardware. Check out this Matrox advertisement: LINK
