...when she gets home later.

Just bought a new iMac 27" on a complete spur of the moment impulse type thing.

Anyway, now that I have it, what is the best way to go about transferring all the stuff on my old iMac to this one?

I have a Super Duper bootable copy and Time Machine copy.

Both work over Firewire so I guess I'll also need some form of adapter?

Shouldn't you wait until she decides to spare you before you worry about transferring files over?:)

Migration tool is another way to get stuff over to the new computer and you can do it with FireWire or Ethernet too..

well, I'm still here - luckily my wife Lisa is OK with it!

I was saving for an electronic drum kit so I guess this was an easier option for her to take. Now I have to start saving for that kit again.

Anyway, migration assistant worked a treat thanks - from my Super Duper copy at least. Time Machine somehow copied from a year or more or so ago for some reason!

Moving up from the 20" is a bit of a shock though. Considered the 21.5" but will be keeping this for a few years yet so went for one where the RAM can be upgraded if needed.

After running migration assistant yesterday, this morning I checked how much disc space is being used up.

It seems that much more is being used on my new iMac than on my old:

Audio 63.4 GB (compared to 35.9 GB but I have the same number of songs in iTunes)
Movies 46.2 (compared to 38.2 but same number of movies and TV shows))
Photos 48.9 (compared to 44.7)
Apps 10.3 (compared to 13.7 - so less somehow)
Other 40.8 (compared to 24.4)

Total 209.61GB (compared to 151.73GB)

I migrated from a Super Duper clone taken just before migration but that came in at just 151.73GB.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

sorted - it was the failed Time Machine migration still stored in deleted users folder.

Sometimes it's just better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. :Smirk:

Thanks everyone but I'm OK!

I do have form for this sort of thing - went out for a haircut one Saturday morning a few years ago and came home with a drum kit.

I had no intention of changing my iMac but once in the shop just had to have the new one. It is a great machine though and running so much faster than my old iMac (which is now being wiped to give to my sister who got me into apple in the first place).
