Can anyone help? RE: Quick Time

I have an IMAC running 10.6.8
I have Quicktime Pro v. 7.6.6 and Quicktime 10.0 installed

There are MPEG-4 files on the hard drive that I want to open with Quicktime Pro 7.6.6.
I get the following message when trying to open:
The movie could not be opened. The movie contains invalid data.

The MPEG 4 files will open with Quicktime V. 10.0 but I want to open the files in the other QT because of the better editing options.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

mp4 files can contain various codecs, depending on the file you have the older Quicktime may not be able to understand it.

You can try installing Perian. It's not maintained anymore but it does allow Quicktime to use many more codecs and file formats.

Installed Perian. Still can't play the MP 4 files.

There's not much more you can do if the format can't be read.

You can open it in VLC and see when codecs its using or use a tool like handbrake to convert it
